The house was built in 1947 by Bynum Penland when he returned from duty during World War II. The property was given to Bynum by his father as a wedding gift. With little money to work with, Bynum and his family members harvested timber from the mountain located at the back of the property. They milled it into lumber with a small portable saw. The timbers that make up the structural part of the house are the original boards cut by Bynum and his brothers and neighbors. The hardwood floors seen throughout the cottage are all original, installed during the original phase of construction.

PLEASE USE CAUTION. DO NOT LEAVE FIRE TABLE UNNATTENDED WHEN IN USE!

Make sure fire table is not in contact with anything flammable. If you move the table to the center of the pavilion, please do so with a person on each end of the table to avoid damaging anything.
1. Remove Cover.
2. Remove center piece at top of table to uncover the burner.
3. Open the left side door at end of table.
4. Open the propane tank by turning the knob at the top counter-clockwise.
5. Turn the knob at the front of the table counter-clockwise while holding the knob in. Turn it until it is pointing directly to the left.
6. While continuing to depress the knob, wait about 20 seconds and press the red starter button. You will hear a clicking sound. If the table doesn't light immediately, release the starter button, continue to depress the knob, and wait 15 seconds and press the starter button again. It may take a few times repeating this sequence for the table to light.

2. Open the door at the left end of table.
3. Turn the knob atop the propane tank clockwise (to the right) until it is closed.
